University Research Week 2020

University Research Week 2020

University Research Week (URW) 2020 featured more than 40 events, including a virtual symposium on UNC’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, talks from the 2020 Hettleman Prize winners, and workshops for students interested in pursuing independent research.

The featured event, “Tackling COVID-19: UNC Researchers Collaborate to Deliver Solutions and Bring Hope,” offered an insider’s look at Carolina’s sustained, holistic response to the COVID-19 pandemic through a panel discussion featuring frontline researchers.

Moderated by UNC alumna Kizzmekia Corbett, the panel included Lori Carter-Edwards, professor of public health leadership; Melissa Miller professor pathology; and Timothy Sheahan, assistant professor of epidemiology.

The Office for Undergraduate Research (OUR) also played a key role in helping students take their first steps into Carolina’s research community. Its annual workshop, “Getting Involved in Research,” offered a practical and welcoming introduction to finding research opportunities on campus. Participants learned how to connect with faculty mentors, navigate available resources, and understand the support OUR provides throughout the research journey.

The session featured both student and faculty panels, giving attendees an honest and encouraging look at how undergraduates get started in research, what faculty look for in mentees, and how to chart a successful research path at UNC.

OUR also co-hosted the “Research and Study Abroad Info Session” with the Study Abroad Office, encouraging undergraduates to explore creative ways to combine study abroad and research opportunities.

All events were held virtually, with select sessions made available for on-demand viewing afterward.

URW also provides an opportunity for campus partners to host events that reflect their unique research missions. In 2020, more than 30 additional sessions offered workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and conversations that broadened the week’s reach. A complete list of these events is included below.
