University Research Week 2022

University Research Week 2022

University Research Week (URW) 2022 featured more than 60 events celebrating the impact of Carolina research across disciplines.

As part of University Research Week, the University Day (Oct. 12) ceremony highlighted the incredible work of UNC faculty and students advancing the state of North Carolina and beyond.

Orlando Coronell, associate professor and associate chair for academics in environmental sciences and engineering in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, and Christian Chung, a biology and public policy major in the UNC College of Arts and Sciences, shared their work on a novel clean water technology for the effective removal of toxic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Caela O’Connell, assistant professor of anthropology and the environment, ecology, and energy program in the UNC College of Arts and Sciences, along with Margot Midkiff, a health policy and management major in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, discussed their work examining human and environmental relationships and how communities adapt to hurricanes, flooding, pollution, and other environmental challenges.

The Office for Undergraduate Research (OUR) held its annual workshop, “Getting Involved in Research,” offering a practical and welcoming introduction to finding research opportunities on campus. Participants learned how to connect with faculty mentors, navigate available resources, and understand the support OUR provides throughout the research journey.

The session featured both student and faculty panels, giving attendees an honest and encouraging look at how undergraduates get started in research, what faculty look for in mentees, and how to chart a successful research path at UNC.

URW also provides an opportunity for campus partners to host events that reflect their unique research missions. In 2022, more than 60 additional sessions offered workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and conversations that broadened the week’s reach. A complete list of these events is included below.
