University Research Week 2021
University Research Week (URW) 2021 featured more than 70 events centered around the theme “Research Perseveres.”
The signature event, “The Health of Our State and Beyond” series, featured four Creativity Hubs teams presenting throughout the week, providing overviews of the significant challenges their teams were working to address, progress made to date, and goals for the future.
The featured research areas included:
- Coastal Resilience
- Obesity
- READDI for the Next Pandemic
- Access to Clean Water
The Creativity Hubs initiative was developed by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research to assemble and support interdisciplinary teams tackling major societal challenges. The work of these collaborative research teams attracts external funding and advances policy changes that directly improve the lives of North Carolinians and communities beyond the state.
The Office for Undergraduate Research (OUR) held its annual workshop, “Getting Involved in Research,” offering a practical and welcoming introduction to finding research opportunities on campus. Participants learned how to connect with faculty mentors, navigate available resources, and understand the support OUR provides throughout the research journey.
The session featured both student and faculty panels, giving attendees an honest and encouraging look at how undergraduates get started in research, what faculty look for in mentees, and how to chart a successful research path at UNC.
Many of the week’s events were held virtually, with in-person programming remaining limited.
URW also provides an opportunity for campus partners to host events that reflect their unique research missions. In 2021, more than 65 additional sessions offered workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and conversations that broadened the week’s reach. A complete list of these events is included below.
