Core Facilities

Learn about Carolina’s more than 140 core facilities that offer a range of resources to the research community, including cutting-edge technologies, high-end instrumentation, technical support, and education. Administered by various schools, units, and departments across campus, they serve a variety of disciplines, enabling researchers to investigate and innovate in ways that wouldn’t be possible within the scope of their individual labs or projects.

Portrait of Ben Wright.Moderator: Ben Wright, Director of Research Core Development, Office of Sponsored Programs
Ben has over six years of experience at the Office of Sponsored Programs as the point of contact for internal and external audits of sponsored projects and manager of the pre-audit, subrecipient monitoring, and post-audit functions. Ben has led UNC through multiple Statewide Single Audits, and numerous other audits of sponsored projects, and has been involved in business process, policy, and internal control improvements.


Portrait of Brandi Ehrmann.Brandie Ehrmann, Director, Mass Spectrometry Core Laboratory; Chemistry
Brandie is the Mass Spectrometry Core Laboratory Director; she trains and teaches graduate students, post-docs, etc in how to properly utilize mass spectrometry in their research. She does core budget management and finance, grant writing, and collaboration with faculty across UNC.


Portrait of Pablo Ariel.Pablo Ariel, Director, Microscopy Services Laboratory; Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Pablo has PhD in Biological Sciences from Rockefeller University. He has been using microscopes since 2005, and teaching other researchers how to use them in core facilities since 2014. He has extensive experience with fluorescence microscopy, confocal, light-sheet, imaging of live samples, and image analysis using FIJI and Imaris. Pablo takes the lead for trainings and consultations on projects using light microscopy and image analysis.

Meghan has over eight years of experience at UNC working with clinical and research operations across campus. Most recently, she spent three years with the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) supporting both financially and operationally their core portfolio. She also worked closely with the School of Medicine (SOM) on broader initiatives and will continue to support LCCC and SOM.
