In celebration of University Research Week, the UNC School of Medicine is proud to announce the winners of the 2025 “Art in Science” competition. This year’s theme, “UNC Research is North Carolina,” inspired stunning visual representations of biomedical research that reflect both scientific innovation and artistic beauty.

The School of Medicine Office of Research received numerous submissions from labs across the SOM, each showcasing a unique intersection of science and art. After careful evaluation for aesthetic excellence, scientific relevance, and broad appeal, three winning images were selected.

The winning images will be on display in Bondurant Hall from October 20th-24th.

This image shows a postnatal P0 mouse kidney immunostained for the renal arterial tree with alpha-Smooth Muscle Actin (SMA, magenta) and nerve with Tubullin Beta Class-III (Tubb3, green) overlayed with oil filter. The image depicts a rare urinary tract congenital defect resulting in ureteral duplication (duplicated collecting system). The kidney was imaged with the LaVision Ultramicroscope II LightSheet using an Olympus MVPLAPO 2X/.5 objective at the UNC Microscopy Service Laboratory. It was one of the winners of the 2024 “Art in Science” Competition.
