SUMMARY:2023 Art in Science Competition Winners
DESCRIPTION:Scientists in the UNC School of Medicine (SOM) truly embody the
UNC Health tagline- “Scientists of Discovery\, Artists of Innovation”
.\n\nIn celebration of 2023 University Research Week\, the SOM solicited i
nnovative scientific images that showcase the outstanding biomedical resea
rch in the School and the beauty that is reflected in the science.\n\nCome
see the winning submissions on display in the ground floor lobby of Bondu
rant Hall.\n\nThe images will be on display in Bondurant beginning 9am on
Monday\, October 23 and will be taken down by noon on Friday\, October 27.
\n\nThis is an in-person event.\n\nAbout the event photo: One of the 2022
“Art in Science” Competition Winner. “Ganglion” by Dr. Kendall Hut
son (Department of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery\, School of Medicine
). Spiral ganglion cells in a mouse cochlea (the end organ for hearing) im
munolabeled with antibodies to TuJ1 and Pou4F1\, then imaged using light s
heet fluorescent microscopy. Axons of these cells form the auditory nerve
which carries information about sounds from the cochlea to the brain. Clus
ters of ganglion cells respond to a specific range of tones\, and each cel
l is tuned to a specific quality of a tone based on its intensity (loudnes
s). TuJ1 (blue) marks all ganglion cell bodies\, while Pou4f1 (pink) marks
the nucleus of cells tuned for loud sounds.
